Are You Ready For This?

On Monday, March 30th, 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued emergency Executive Order 20-89. Basically, this order told Monroe County, Florida, Broward County Florida, and Palm Beach County, Florida that they have to follow the directives already issued by Miami-Dade County, Florida. These Miami-Dade directives dealt with essential and non-essential business.

In order to understand state Executive Order 07-20, you have to read Miami-Dade County Emergency Order 07-20 (March 19th, 2020) and the three amendments to the original order

Why am I mentioning this?  Because it appears the Governor’s plan is Do What Miami Does, and as Corvid 19 spreads across Florida we can expect further Executive Orders from the state. (Hopefully, our local government will act first!!)

Executive Order 20-89 has been referred to as a “Shelter In Place” order. However, you will not find this term in any of the orders listed above. Here are some questions that have been asked by people under other local/state Shelter In Place orders:

Can I …….

  • … go to the hair or nail salon?

Nope, these businesses are (or should be) closed, as the services cannot be performed while maintaining social distancing measures

  • … shop for groceries? Yes
  • … walk my dog?

Yes, so long as you stay at least 6 feet away from other people while you do it.

*… go to the airport?

Technically, yes, airports are not covered by shelter in place orders. Is it a wise idea to travel during a pandemic? Probably not.

  • … go to the doctor

If you are having a medical emergency or have made an appointment with a doctor, yes. However most government officials recommend that people utilize telemedicine as much as possible to reduce the strain on hospitals and doctors’ offices, and to reduce the likelihood of infection.

  • … go see my friends?

Physically? No, you must practice social distancing measures. Virtually? Yes.

  • … go for a run, walk, or work outside?

If you are healthy and stay 6 or more feet away from others at all times, yes.

  • … leave town?

Ostensibly, yes, no one will stop you. However, nonessential travel is highly discouraged..
