Florida has now tested 1% of its population for COVID-19 and is lagging behind 20 states in testing. Experts say testing is crucial to curtailing the epidemic and must be expanded.

While Treasure Coast elected officials make decisions on what to keep open, trying to balance public health and the local economy, they are operating with half of the information their counterparts in most of South Florida have.

Less than 0.7% of Treasure Coast residents have been tested for COVID-19, as of Wednesday afternoon, according to state Department of Health data.

This stands in stark contrast to the entire state, where about 1% have been tested for the novel coronavirus, and in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where greater than 1.5% have been tested.
